History

2011 Steven Webb appointed new Director.
2010 Frank McEvoy appointed Chair of Trustees.
2009 25th Anniversary Celebrations.
2008 Frank Maguire retires. Dick Madden takes over as Director. Dick comes from a background in the Police Force.
2007 A special event is held at The Waterfront Restaurant, Chelmsford to celebrate and acknowledge the important work of our wonderful Volunteers.
2006 The Society is presented with the High Sheriff’s Award at a special ceremony held at Fennes Estate, Bocking.
2005 The Society is awarded £10,000 from the Jack Petchey Foundation. ‘Childcare’ Charity Shop in Billericay closes.
2004 The offices move from Fairview Convent to Childcare House, Rayleigh. We celebrate our 20th Anniversary. Mgr. John Armitage, together with 10 primary schools and Brentwood Cathedral Choiristers give a memorable performance of ‘Oliver’ at the Brentwood Centre, raising approximately £10,000.
2003 Charity Shop, ‘Childcare’ is opened in Billericay. Bishop Thomas McMahon visits the Society at the offices in Fairview.
2002 The Society receives Investors in People Award for the first time. A significant investment is made in the training and professional development of the staff to improve the quality of service.
2001 The Board of Trustees commissions Anglia Polytechnic University to conduct an independent evaluation of the work of the Society. Social Services asks the Society to join in partnership with them to advocate and mediate on behalf of young victims of crime.
2000 The Society moves from Ongar Road, Brentwood to Fairview Convent, Queens Road, Brentwood. The Charity Shop in Highams Park presents a cheque to the Society, making a magical total of £100,000 raised so far by Irene Newell and her stalwart group of volunteers.
1999 Family Centre at Cardinal Heenan centre closes due to lack of suitable referrals and funding. St. John Payne School, Chelmsford provides a portacabin to our Social Work staff as office accommodation.
1998 Tony Galcius retires. Frank Maguire takes over as Director of the Society. Frank comes from a background in the Social Services and Probation Office.
1997 The Society moves Head Quarters to Ongar Road, Brentwood but still retain an office in the Cardinal Heenan Centre, Ilford.
1996 The Society adopts a prefix and becomes Brentwood Catholic Children's Society, a charitable Trust in its own right.
1995 Plans are made to provide a full-time Social Worker for each of the six pairs of Deaneries in the Diocese.
1994 This was the Society’s 10th Birthday and also the United Nations ‘Year of the Family’. Andrew Wright, Stephen Ginns and the Cathedral Boy’s Choir staged a concert in Colchester to mark our birthday celebrations.
1993 Irene & John Newell voluntarily set up the Charity Shop, ‘Base Rate’, in Highams Park which was to become a successful enterprise.
1992 Mother and Baby Home closes in April due to the lack of funding but a quote from Mother Theresa inspires the Society during difficult times. “I have never refused a child. Never, not one. Each child is precious. Each child is created by God.”
1991 Children’s Day is given a boost by Joe Browne who resurrects collections in some of the London Parishes for the Society.
1990 The Society opens a Family Centre in the Cardinal Heenan Centre to build self esteem and confidence, improve domestic skills and improve child handling skills for parents.
1989 A group of 24 families and some 100 children are sent on a caravan holiday to Jaywick. the cost of this is met by the Society.
1988 A Mother and Baby Home is opened in Forest View, Chingford for pregnant and vulnerable young mothers. Tony Galcius takes over as Director of the Society.
1987 The Society moves into the Cardinal Heenan Centre. On a notice board in the main hall were the words “Suffer little children to come to Me".
1986 The first Annual Mass is celebrated in Brentwood Cathedral. The Society supports the planning and running of the St. John Bosco Holiday Camp.
1985 The Society moves to Cardinal Wiseman School, E17, where they work in a disused toilet room.
1984 Following the closure of the Children’s Homes in Basildon, Fr. John Armitage adopts the role of Director of the Catholic Children’s Society (Brentwood Diocese) and together with his staff, move to Anchor House, Barking, where they work from a cupboard.
