Trusts
The facts
The Association of Charitable Foundations suggests that there are some 10,000 charitable trusts and foundations in the UK distributing some £2billion in grants annually. This equates to 10% of all income received into voluntary organisations.
Many charitable trusts derive their income from and endowment or a benefactor. However, there are some exceptions to this:
- BBC Children in Need, Comic Relief and Sport Relief raise money from the public to distribute to good causes.
- Community Foundations that support local community needs. A good example is Essex Community Foundation which began in 1986. One of some 60+ community organisations across the country which play a leading role in the development of local philanthropy and distribute resources to sustain voluntary organisations in the community.
Essex Community Foundation has assisted our Society in the past and via the High Sheriff's Fund have recognised our work with an Award for the past six Years.
As a general rule grant making trusts and foundations follow their own direction rather than being led by the government of the day. They will take a view on what they want to achieve and how that will benefit local groups.
